JCP Guided Navigation Menu System
Guided navigation menu solution for JCPenney.com built on the Endeca engine — competitive teardown, design exploration, usability testing, and a UI requirements document the JCP engineering team built against.
Razorfish worked closely with JCPenney to create a guided navigation menu solution for their website. This was an extremely visible and important project for JCP since it would affect how users would ultimately browse and find most products on the site.
Competitive Review
For this project, I started by taking a certification class to familiarize myself with the Endeca engine that drives guided navigation. I then conducted an exhaustive competitive review of all major guided navigation solutions available at that time identifying UI components and interaction models used to support guided navigation.
Design Exploration
From the review, I identified the best-in-class features from each competitor and developed a set of principals to apply to the design of JCP's guided menu system.
Prototypes and Usability Testing
Working closely with visual designers we generated multiple prototypes of varying levels of fidelity. We then tested these prototypes with end users to identify likes and dislikes of each design.
Finished Product
After testing, I created a UI requirements document for the JCP software engineers to follow. Once a solution was selected we conducted limited live testing of our solution on small pieces of the website before eventually rolling it out to the entire site.
